Privacy Policy

In short
Chapters is a private place for your photos and voice notes. Only the people in a chapter can see what is in it. We don’t show ads, we don’t sell your information, and we don’t track you across other apps or sites.
What stays on your phone
To suggest days worth keeping, Chapters looks through the photos on your phone: their dates, where they were taken, and which camera took them. This happens on your phone only. Nothing it reads is uploaded or shared, and it is kept in a part of the phone that isn’t included in the phone’s own backup. A photo leaves your phone only if you choose to add it to a chapter.
You can turn suggestions off at any time in You, under Memory suggestions.
What we keep
Your account: your email address and your name. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive the email address and name they share with us (Apple may give us a private relay address instead of your own).
What you add: the photos you add (at full size), with the date they were taken and, when the photo has one, where it was taken and the name of that place; the words, voice notes and replies you add; the chapters you make, who is in them, and the invitations you send (the invited person’s email address and name).
When you add a photo with a location, its place name is looked up by your phone’s own location service (on most Android phones, Google’s).
Who can see it
Only the people in a chapter can see what is in it. Links to a chapter only work for people who are in it, and an invitation only works for the email address it was sent to. Owners of a chapter can invite people, remove people, and take things out of their chapter.
Where it’s kept
Your account and your chapters’ details (their names, the words and replies, who is in each chapter, and the invitations you send) are kept in our database in India (Supabase, in Mumbai).
Your photos and voice notes are stored and delivered by Cloudflare, in its Asia-Pacific region.
Backups are encrypted. Photos and voice notes are backed up in the European Union (Backblaze, EU Central). The database is backed up with Cloudflare, in its Asia-Pacific region.
Who helps us
We use a few services to run Chapters: Supabase (our database and sign-in), Cloudflare (storing and delivering photos and voice notes, and keeping database backups), Backblaze (keeping encrypted backups of photos and voice notes), Resend (sending sign-in codes by email), Expo (delivering notifications to your phone, if you turn them on), and Google and Apple when you choose to sign in with them. They handle your information only to provide their service to us.
Deleting
What you delete is kept for 30 days (a deleted chapter can be brought back from Recently deleted in that time), then permanently deleted. It is permanently deleted from Chapters and from our encrypted backups within 65 days of being deleted.
To delete your account, go to You and choose Delete account; it asks twice, and it can’t be undone. Everything you added is removed, in every chapter, including chapters you share: your photos, captions, voice notes and replies. Your account is switched off at once and permanently deleted, backups included, within 65 days. Chapters you made stay for the other people in them, with what they added. Without the app, see Delete your account.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we’ll tell you in the app first. Questions: hello@chaptersapp.site. Chapters is run by Vrisha Rongala, India.
